Light Night Project
Light Night runs every year in Nottingham and this year Nottingham Trent University is part of the event. The space we are using is the front of Newton Building at the city campus of Nottingham Trent University and our inspiration is the work of Sir Isaac Newton.

BRIEF: To design and create a light and projection installation for the front the Newton Building as part of the Nottingham Light celebrations on Friday 8th February 2012. The installation should reflect and interpret, in a celebratory way, the rich and diverse work of Sir Isaac Newton and emphasis links with the site. Newton was co-inventor of calculus, discovered the law of Universal Gravitation, Newton’s 3 laws of motion, theory of light, law of cooling, professor, theologian, alchemist, warden of the Mint. The installation proposal must take into consideration the implications of working within the constraints of this site. It is critical that the design is realistic in terms of concept and implementation, and achievable within the given timeframe. This is a group project and you will have access to materials for constructing a set, objects and props for the installation and two projectors. A series of workshop and tutorials on projection design and mapping would be organised to support this project. This project has a short timeframe and would require your full commitment during January.

Looking in particular at Newton’s theory of light, we decided to explore the combination of projection mapping and the use of prisms. We started by looking at installations involving light, prisms and projection.

Our initial idea was to create a prism to house the projector and build seven ‘doors’ for each colour of the spectrum.

This is the test content for five of the seven screens. I chose abstract stock footage for each video and layered the footage with effects so that the video clips could be easily looped.

After testing with our projector, however, we discovered that the spread required was too wide for the projector in the space we had. We are now testing smaller ‘fractured’ shapes to project on to. We are also experimenting with mirrored material for the screens.
